I imagine this will ramp up the furor over this election season:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration will stop deporting and begin granting work permits to younger illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have since led law-abiding lives. The election-year initiative addresses a top priority of an influential Latino electorate that has been vocal in its opposition to administration deportation policies.

This is the lie they keep pushing. Twice as many Latinos list the economy as a higher priority, and slightly more list taxes. Ever hear that from the media?

The policy change, described to The Associated Press by two senior administration officials, will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants who have lived in fear of deportation. It also bypasses Congress and partially achieves the goals of the so-called DREAM Act, a long-sought but never enacted plan to establish a path toward citizenship for young people who came to the United States illegally but who have attended college or served in the military.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano was to announce the new policy Friday, one week before President Barack Obama plans to address the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials’ annual conference in Orlando, Fla. Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney is scheduled to speak to the group on Thursday.

Under the plan, immigrants whose deportation cases are pending in immigration court will have to prove their eligibility for a reprieve to ICE, which will begin dealing with such cases in 60 days. Any immigrant who already has a deportation order and those who never have been encountered by immigration authorities will deal with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

[emphasis added]

Obama knows his numbers have been falling among Latinos, and a lot of it comes from his deporting illegals and broken promise over immigration reform. But is that it? Latino unemployment is also very high, and it’s an enormous mistake to keep thinking amnesty is all Latinos care about – if not, somewhat racist.

Conservatives need to be outraged over this – Obama is again trampling on the careful political balance set into our constitutional system by our founders. But then, he’s smarter than they are, right? After all, how could they know what’s best when they didn’t share his skin color?

This is a sad day for America.

I expect that this will be lauded in the Latino Media, but will be carefully framed in the Anglo media in order to quell the inevitable anger. It is not the full Dream Act, but many of the goals in the proposed legislation are met in this executive order, and I expect will lead to more pressure to pass the full bill.

UPDATE:

More great news – all these young illegal immigrants are granted amnesty just in time to compete with legal Americans for summer jobs, who have a 74.3% unemployment rate (seasonally adjusted). So that’s your reward for playing by the rules, Americans!

UPDATE:

The other political consequence of this is to partly take some air out of Marco Rubio’s sails, since he was working on a modified Dream Act himself. His proposed legislation would have charted a path for legalization for those who would serve in the military, and not simply for attending college.

Of course, the lapdog media is jumping on this, making Obama seem like an absolute genius for ripping off chunks of the Constitution for the sake of votes.

The Hill reports on some Republican criticism:

“How can the administration justify allowing illegal immigrants to work in the U.S. when millions of Americans are unemployed?” said Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. “President Obama and his administration once again have put partisan politics and illegal immigrants ahead of the rule of law and the American people.”

I hope more Republicans stay on this line of questioning – hit Obama on JOBS.

We have such a long history of demanding Mexicans come here to the U.S. to work and then kicking them out when wars end etc. I mean it really goes back a ways. In 1924 the border patrol was started, but not to keep out Mexicans, to keep out Europeans and Asians. We wanted Mexicans here to work. Policies throughout history have encouraged Mexicans to come here to work and at one point when Mexico said ‘Enough is enough,’ the U.S. demanded that they come over, even if the Mexican govt said ‘no.’
At many points it was easier to come here without papers and it was also encouraged not only by businesses, but also by policies put into place. So now there are immigrants who came to America to try to make a better life for themselves, like all people who have come to America over the years (except Native Americans who are the only ones who didn’t emigrate here) and they brought young children with them.

Imagine growing up in a country, speaking English more than Spanish, in many cases, and being told you have to return to Mexico to live and make your way, when you can’t even remember ever being there and your family, friends and life is here. Imagine not being able to get an education or a job you want because of a choice your parents made because they saw that to come to America would allow them to have a better life or maybe just food. Isn’t it just human to want to better yourself? Isn’t that what all immigrant groups who have come to America have done?

”Illegals” as you call them, are people. Kids, teens, men, women- people. This is America. People have immigrated since the beginning.

Yes, it is human. It’s still illegal. Compassion does not overcome reality. And it’s easy to be compassionate with other people’s money, and shortsighted of the dire consequences. So shove it.
